Achieving a Higher Sense of Self-Awareness: Free Birth Control & Free Sex Ed From Unusual Places

In the wake of sorting through fake news and trying to understand what exactly is happening in the current world I live in, I have resorted to fact checking over a pint of ice cream before laying a keystroke near a social media outlet. Finding a safe and affordable form of birth control from home in my searches on women’s reproductive health I did not expect, but definitely put a smile on my face and was able to get a few positive things done (and share the love with you).

The plight of our nation's coverage of reproductive health, watching the woman, Katy Talento, elected for Domestic Policy Counsel (focusing on healthcare policy) who also believes taking birth control causes abortions and miscarriages which has been disproven by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, is going to be one of the people zeroing in on the Affordable Care Act is all horrifying.  Rolling back the Affordable Care Act would be similar to just backing your mom's van over a garbage can as a teenager: it's going to suck, be expensive, and you will probably be trying to find a new way to enjoy your summer with the limited resources in your room.

Send a dove or an optimistic fortune cookie because those cloudy days of alternative facts and trying to find affordable contraceptives are over: even without insurance!  NuRx is the Amazon Prime of birth control promising to roll out three months of birth control with free shipping in TWO DAYS .  Oh yeah, it is FREE if you have insurance and generally costs less than $15 without. I can personally attest to this by going through the process myself.  The company just rolled out a new campaign and ridiculously badass contest and you get $30 CREDIT TOWARDS YOUR BIRTH CONTROL USING THE CODE “NASTYWOMAN." Along with the other perks, I see where the company’s stance is and I absolutely love the successful marketing to millennials who need more comfort in their health choices.  I tried the code myself, *just to make sure.* We are golden and you are set to go until the end of March with this glorious deal:

Imagine a world where you can talk to real health professionals and physicians that can answer any question you have in relation to birth control.  The site flows well and was easy to understand.  They have an array of options including emergency contraception, and will be able to guide you to any drug interactions or concerns of what might be the right fit for you. After that, you answer a few questions similar to those asked on a doctor's form, fill out your height/weight stats, upload a picture of your ID and/or insurance card and *boom* a physician will approve your request, write the prescription  to where it is then filled and it is on the way to you!  The only request on my end was to send in a photo copy of my blood pressure reading which could easily be done at any pharmacy.  Along the way I received updated texts and emails to update each stage of the process and was chatting with an actual medical professional while on the website.  NuRx is going to and already is completely changing the game on accessibility and ease of finding birth control.  While NuRx is only available in Pennsylvania, New York, D.C, California, Washington, and Illinois,  they are working on expanding nationwide.

My last trip to a doctor before knowing about NuRx was a complete nightmare of a stuffy waiting room and a multi-hour wait then to be told I would have to be referred to somewhere that had a higher co-pay due to policy changes.  I remember before the Affordable Care Act when you had to have a mandatory prescription for Emergency Contraception (and many states/counties this is still in effect). It pains me to know that people cannot travel or afford birth control (knowing that it could have been prevented or have been educated more on the subject), though now PornHub offers Safe For Work (and adolescents) "Sexual Wellness Center" with basic sexual anatomy, safe sex (including descriptions of STI and STDs), sexuality, and all forms of reproductive health (including contraception). Dr. Laurie who runs the QandA’s and videos on the site has created and was speaker of several TedTalks, author of several books, has been a clinical psychologist and therapist for over two decades.

So to end with a few facts, pass along both NuRx and PornHub's Sex Wellness Center and help in this time of a preferred abstinence only education and resources for women are disappearing daily:

  • Evidence has shown taking birth control pills with both estrogen and progesterone can lower a woman's risk of developing this type of endometrial and ovarian cancer three to six months after beginning its use.
  • 71 other companies, not just Hobby Lobby, want to deny offering employees birth control
  • The average male loses his virginity at age 16.9; females average slightly older, at 17.4. And a new study shows that genetics may be a factor: inherited traits, such as impulsivity, can make a person more or less willing to have sex at an earlier age.
  • Before ObamaCare more than 50 percent of women delayed seeking medical care due to cost, and one-third of women reported forgoing basic necessities to pay for health care. Check out this site to see facts of how Obamacare has helped women's healthcare reform and how dangerous it could be for women if this unravels.

Black and pink rhinestone birth control case!: On a happy note, I will update when my package arrives in the mail and keep all of you informed as I go!  Maybe I will brush up on some sex ed knowledge while I wait and grab one of these adorable birth control holders by BeadDiscreet!  ;)

[mental health awareness: why i don't celebrate valentine's day]

Mental Health Awareness:
Why I Don't Celebrate Valentine's Day

The bear I am holding I bought myself 15 years ago.  Though I do not post many things about my personal life, I do suffer from major depression, GAD, PTSD, and BPD which is treated with medication I take daily, years of therapy  and a lot of meditation and self-care.  This has stemmed a mixture of genetic mental disorders and personal events that have not only shaped the person I am today but has made me aware of how important mental health help and awareness is.  And though I am stronger, no one can be strong 100% of the time.

Like many people,  I was constantly bullied in school and was always one of the few kids who never got a Valentine - even the class packs where everyone was supposed to get. I was even teased for not having a southern accent like all the other girls and boys where I lived.  I didn't attend church nor any of the accompanying church activities that my school pushed as being in a small Christian town.  It wasn't normal to form your own opinions about religion or break a social norm. I never had a single sleepover or was invited to one until my senior when I was already traveling and didn't really care anymore after 17 years of nothing.  My birthdays were spent alone.

The Significance of Valentine's Day:

I moved out before.....
